Richard Lander School

Pipes, pumps, plant rooms and pupils

When the Richard Lander School, in Truro, Cornwall, was chosen as one of the seventeen schools in the region to be transformed under the Government’s Private Finance Initiative, it was clear from the beginning that this was going to be a large scale project for all who worked on it.

This transformation was not just going to be a case of updating the current school buildings and facilities, but was of a much larger scale involving a change of site and a completely new building. A principal aim of the new design was for it to meet ‘School-of-the-Future’ standards set by the DfES (Department for Education and Skills), and also for the new accommodation and facilities to be in keeping with the school’s Technology College status.

So when Space Engineering Services were approached by Interserve Engineering to work on the Richard Lander School, we knew this was an opportunity not be missed.

Our involvement
Space Engineering Services were tasked with installing all the mechanical services required in the building, from heating and air conditioning, to plant rooms and supply pumps; from hot and cold water supplies to the sanitary works - all of this whilst working in line with the school’s aim of being modern, efficient and economical.

Space Engineering Services were responsible for the design and installation of under floor heating in the gym and dance studio, reducing the need to heat the entire room. In addition, we designed a system which enables each classroom to be individually temperature controlled, eliminating unoccupied classrooms being heated unnecessarily and ultimately saving energy and money.

All mechanical services were fitted to the high specification and standard expected of us and our dedicated project and installation team delivered on time and exceeded Interserve’s expectations.

The new Richard Lander School is the first complete new secondary school in Cornwall for a quarter of a century, and admitted 1350 pupils when it opened in September 2006. The project has provided invaluable lessons for the forthcoming government ‘Building Schools for the Future’ initiative, which promises to renew secondary school’s across the country. Space Engineering Services are proud to have worked so successfully on one of the initial schools in the scheme.

Very happy to go back to school...

“Space Engineering Services were delighted to have been invited to work on such a large scale and worthwhile project. Whilst it has been one of the more challenging projects for us, it is a testament to the team that the work was completed on time and to an excellent standard, and highlights the excellent client relationships we foster and our ability to respond to any project undertaken.”
