Reaching new heights with UniCredit
UniCredit, one of Europe's largest banking groups, recently faced a considerable technical problem.
Four twin circuit, roof mounted chillers at their Moor House building in London's financial district were defective and in need of replacement.
The building's height of 276ft and the close proximity of similarly huge structures such as the NatWest Tower and the Swiss Re Building, more commonly known as the Gherkin, were important factors that required careful consideration.
UniCredit approached Space Engineering Services to help with this complex project in the heart of the City of London.
So what did Space do?
The first imperative was for the Service and Maintenance division to deliver emergency rectification of any defects, and implement a proactive maintenance and monitoring regime including a rapid response call out procedure.
The Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) department planned how to deal with the confined nature of the building and catacomb streets, not to mention the high winds expected at the height of the operations.
Craig Timbrell of Space Engineering Services explains, "We not only had to think about the height of the building, we also had to take into consideration an underground shaft directly below Moor House and designed for a new railway station for the Crossrail project. Plus of course the fact that we had to ensure that UniCredit's operation was unaffected during the refurbishment. The successful completion of this project is a great example of how our different departments can work together to deliver"
Working with the client, Scott Wilson, the City of London Council, and the Health & Safety Executive, M&E planned the safe removal of the defective chillers for staged transfer back to pack build, where the units repair and modifications were undertaken.
The phased off-site refurbishment was a success and Space Engineering Services completed the project to complete satisfaction of the client.
