The New Face of Employee Welfare

The New Face of Employee Welfare

23 Apr 2018

Space Engineering Services, a market leader in the UK refrigeration sector, has designed a new and interesting way of delivering health and safety information.

‘Ace’ is a science fiction character, designed and brought to life by the company to send out vitally important messages to its workforce. His striking colour scheme and air of familiarity will promote important safety messages that will help look after the company’s employees, customers and all those affected by their work.

Space Engineering Services employs almost 800 people throughout the UK with its head office at Pioneer Park in Bristol, a manufacturing facility in Pucklechurch, and a customer support hub next to Bristol Temple Meads. In addition to local operations, the company has employees nationwide who are engaged in designing, manufacturing, installing, servicing and maintaining the refrigeration, mechanical and electrical services at supermarkets, distribution centres, and food and beverage manufacturers among others.

According to the Health & Safety Executive there were around 64,000 non-fatal injuries in the UK in the years 2014/15 and 15/16 and commenting on this, Space Engineering Services’ Dale Nouch said:

“Although engaging staff in health and safety matters is notoriously difficult in all industries, it is a fact that many injuries are preventable and so we must do whatever we can to drive home these important messages.”

Space Engineering Services takes both health and safety extremely seriously and the company has a track record second to none in this respect that it intends to maintain.

The company undertakes a wide array of health and safety measures including tool-box talks, sending pop-up messages to workers’ tablet devices, and organising training sessions. A team of Managers and dedicated health and safety advisors travel the country advising staff on the latest and very best practice and keep health and safety at the top of the agenda.

Space Ace, as he’s quickly become known, was launched recently internally within the company and he will add to the health and safety agenda with a programme that includes posters and banners in all of the company’s nine offices, stickers with key messages in the company’s fleet of more than 450 vehicles, and numerous other campaigns that will run as a permanent feature for the refrigeration industry leader.

In addition, the company has created a stamp of approval featuring Ace that will be applied to processes that have been quality checked by both the Board of Directors and the company’s health and safety advisors.

Space Engineering Services is a major employer in the Bristol area and a permanent recruitment programme operates in the region and throughout the UK for potential new recruits. It is hoped that Ace will help attract new recruits who increasingly evaluate a company’s policies on welfare at work before joining up. As part of new apprenticeship scheme to introduce new talent into the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, the company has recently taken on nine apprentices. Dale added:

“Health is just as important as safety in our business and we expect Ace will make a big impact. Our business’ success is down to the people in it! This means the overall welfare of our existing employees is paramount, as well as to demonstrate our values to new recruits.”
